History of Bay View Lodge

A Century of Tradition and Hospitality

The Early Days: Golden Sands Farm

On December 14, 1906
Johan & Lovisa Carlson purchased a plot of land known as Golden Sands. The Carlson family settled on the land, building a farmhouse where Cabin 8 stands today. For the next 40 years, the property remained in the hands of various families who farmed the land, never imagining the future resort that would take shape here.

The Birth of a Resort: Bon Repoz

September 19, 1945
In 1956, the resort changed hands once again, this time purchased by H.J. (Butz) & Luella Pass. The Pass family expanded the resort, adding Cabins 6, 7, and 9 and building a new residence on the property, which freed up the original farmhouse (now Cabin 8) for guests. In an unforgettable move, Butz painted the cabins a bright Pepto-Bismol Pink, creating a distinctive look that became part of the resort’s quirky charm.

Growth and Expansion: The Gregg Brothers

1975
The next chapter began in 1975 when the Gregg brothers purchased the resort. They continued expanding the property, converting an old garage into Cabin 10 and adding two mobile homes as Cabins 11 and 12. Their efforts helped the resort grow while maintaining its welcoming atmosphere.

Modernization: The Gunelson Family

1977
the Gunelson family took ownership and made significant improvements to the property. They built the lodge as an addition to the existing residence and added stairways down to the lake, making it easier for guests to access the waterfront. The Gunelsons' improvements helped modernize the resort while retaining its lakeside charm.

A New Name and Vision: The Berg Family

October 6, 1987
Jim & Mary Ann Berg purchased the resort and brought a new vision. They wanted the property to cater primarily to families and reflect the beauty of the lakeside location. With that in mind, they renamed the resort Bay View Lodge. The Berg family worked tirelessly to enhance the resort, repainting the cabins in earth-tone brown, building an onsite boat ramp, adding a seasonal campground, and remodeling every cabin. Their dedication transformed Bay View Lodge into the family-friendly resort it is today.

Tim & Patrica Berg

2018
In 2018 Tim & Patrica Berg took over Bay View Lodge in hopes of continuing the legacy Jim & Mary Ann had created. Since 2018 Bay View has seen the addition of 2 newly constructed cabins, complete remodels of 2 cabins, 2 additional screened in porches were added, to go along with the remodel of numerous kitchens, bathrooms, and other improvements.
It is the goal of Tim, Patricia, Bryson, Brooklyn, Mike, Braxton and Eli to continue the rich tradition and history of Northern Minnesota hospitality in the many years to come.
